VAN AERT READY TO RESTART: «CROSS IS MY FIRST LOVE, BUT FOR 2025 I'M THINKING ABOUT TOUR AND ROUBAIX»

Van Aert's season is about to begin and on Monday, Christmas Eve, the Flemish rider will return to racing in cyclocross. It's an anticipated race, because in Mol he will meet Mathieu van der Poel, his historic rival.
2024 was a year full of successes and heavy falls for Van Aert that, in addition to physically hitting him, led him to moments of significant discouragement. In this season, the most important victories were the three stages at the Vuelta and then the bronze medal in the time trial at the Paris Olympics. But the Belgian's season was mainly marked by accidents at Through Flanders and the Vuelta in Spain.
«After my fall at the Vuelta, it was more difficult to find motivation – Van Aert recounted during a press meeting at Red Bull – I took the necessary time and spent many weeks with my family and this helped me».
In Mol, Van Aert will compete in the first of the 6 cyclocross races he will run during the winter: once again his will be a limited season, because the road program will take precedence over everything.
«Not much has changed in recent years, I practice cyclocross in a much more limited way compared to before. But for me, immersing myself in this discipline during the winter is truly a ritual. Sometimes, especially when you're injured, you think about taking things a bit more calmly during the winter. Cyclocross is my second nature, my first love that I always return to».
The Flemish rider, after the accident at Through Flanders, had suffered a significant setback, because it had compromised his participation in the Tour of Flanders and Paris-Roubaix, as well as the Giro d'Italia. After rehabilitation and returning to racing, he had presented himself at the start of the Vuelta, but once again misfortune knocked at his door and thus a new fall forced him to stop after winning stages and being in command of the points and mountain classifications.
«My motivation is intrinsic to myself – Van Aert continued during the Red Bull meeting - I have always wanted to be the best in everything since I was a child. That desire always returns, without me wanting it or having to do anything to bring it back. If I haven't raced for a few weeks, motivation comes naturally and I immediately want to commit myself to the maximum. The people around me really help me see things from a positive perspective and make me understand that there are other things. So they are important to maintain my stability».
The Visma-Lease a Bike Flemish rider wants a 2025 that has nothing to do with the year just ended. The road season will have to bring him to conquer the races that are still missing from his palmares and even if there has been a slowdown in his preparation, Van Aert is convinced he can achieve his goals. «I want to win the races I have always dreamed of. My main objectives, absolutely, will remain the Tour de France, with the stage, and Paris-Roubaix. When I think about these appointments, I only think that I want to do everything possible to conquer them».
