GIRO D'ITALIA. LOTTO WITHDRAWS AND THE WILDCARD RACE BEGINS

The new Giro d'Italia hasn't even been born yet, and there are already those who are declining to participate. It has become customary that one of the teams with a wild card right - note, a right and not an obligation - declines the pink race: this has happened several times with TotalEnergies, last year Lotto Soudal declined, and in 2025 it will be the Belgian team passing on the opportunity.
This was revealed in an interview with Cyclism'actu by the team's general manager Stephane Heulot. Various reasons are behind the decision: in no particular order, the departure of sponsor Dstny and a consequent downsizing of the roster from 28 to 25 riders; the "sudden" departure of Maxim Van Gils who was not replaced; the team sponsors' interest pushing towards the Tour and the Vuelta, which belongs to the same family as the French race; the need to exploit the month of May, rich in races, to travel around Europe collecting precious points for the world ranking in view of license allocation for the next three years. The Giro is prestigious, but to score many points you must have at least a top-five rider...
Lotto's withdrawal opens the wildcard race almost a month before the race presentation, scheduled for January 13. The organizers will thus have three wildcards available, given that the 18 WorldTour teams are obliged to participate and Israel Premier Tech will certainly be there.
Who will be racing for those three spots? Let's start by saying who won't be: the Toscana Factory Team Vini Fantini cannot be invited because it is not among the top forty teams of the 2024 season. And let's remember that the limit will drop to the thirtieth position in the 2026 season...
In the race will be the two Italian teams VF Group Bardiani CSF Faizané and Team Polti Visit Malta and then the Swiss teams: Tudor Pro Cycling has already raced this year and has further strengthened itself, bringing its roster to 30, while Q36.5 is making its best moves at the end of this year, with the signing of Tom Pidcock and negotiations open with Elia Viviani (not to be underestimated is also the arrival of Milan Vader, if he definitively overcomes his physical issues...).
Other contenders? On paper, Uno-X Mobility could also aspire to the call, although so far the Norwegian team has always looked at the Tour as its main objective. And what if the Spanish teams that won't all find space in the Vuelta also thought about it?

Uno-X Mobility sarebbe bellissimo averla al via. È davvero una bella squadra, ben assortita e che già allo scorso Tour ha fatto benissimo. Poi, al solito vediamo chi viene accettato e con quali criteri.

Al Tour certe scelte di rinuncia, non le ho mai viste, anzi. Poveri noi, altro che il Giro piu' bello e importante del Tour. La parabola discendente non è ancora finita.
