For something to arrive, something must end. One should not be afraid of the end, because every end is a new beginning..." this is the phrase that can summarize the path of Racconigi Cycling Team, which has decided to no longer continue its commitment to women's cycling with a team, but rather with the organization of new races and events, carrying forward the motto: "We Believe in Sport. We Believe in Women".
In its eleven years in women's cycling (2014-2024), the team managed by Claudio Vassallo participated in 601 races, with 2,914 presences, 35 victories, 59 second places, 50 third places, 58 fourth rankings, 50 fifth positions, and 161 top ten placements. How can we not remember the conquest of a world title (with a silver medal and four bronzes), three gold medals at the "European Championships" (with a silver and a bronze), and eleven national titles (with seven silvers and fifteen bronzes). 59 girls have worn the glorious jersey of the historic Cuneo team, also taking part in 12 stage races and 10 races abroad. How can we not mention, finally, the organization of the "Pink Day of Racconigi" in the years 2014, 2015, 2022, 2023, and 2024, the "Three Days in Pink in the Lands of Granda" (2016, 2017, 2018), and the "Two Days in Pink of Racconigi" (2019, 2020, 2021).
To retrace the stages of this passionate journey, through videos, awards, anecdotes, and endless emotions, the team chaired by Silvio Traversa gathered athletes, institutions, sponsors, and supporters at the enchanting scenario of the "Willow Lake" in Caramagna Piemonte (CN). At the intense day of celebration and memories, like in a true and great family, were present Dr. Alberto Cirio, president of the Piedmont Region, Dr. Paolo Bongioanni and Dr. Marco Gallo, both regional councilors of Piedmont, Valerio Oderda, mayor of Racconigi, Andrea Pettiti, municipal councilor of Racconigi with a sports delegation, Davide Sannazzaro, first citizen of Cavallermaggiore and provincial councilor of Cuneo, and Dr. Claudia Martin, CONI delegate of Cuneo.
A letter sent by Dr. Davide Nicco, president of the Piedmont Regional Council, was also read. In the room were also Marshal Nico Brindisino, representing the Racconigi barracks, Walter Parola, representing CRI Racconigi, Don Maurilio, parish priest of the city of Racconigi, Filippo Borrione, race director representing U.C.A.B. Biella, and Giacomino Carrera, former president of the historic Piedmontese association. Elvio Chiatellino, promoter of major cycling events in Piedmont, did not want to miss the event, even just for a greeting.
"Our long journey has given many talented girls the opportunity to experience a true sporting experience and countless indelible emotions" - emphasized a moved Silvio Traversa, president of Racconigi Cycling Team - "your presence here testifies to this and makes us very proud, because it means we have worked in the best possible way. We, who have lived this fantastic experience, feel privileged. The sensations and emotions that a sporting event gives are experienced by each person in a personal and different way, I refer to those who practice it, those who live it from the inside, and those who are spectators. As for me, I try to describe some of my emotions, linked to many moments of this long story lived together. With you girls, the exultations, smiles, tears, laughs, songs sung at the top of our lungs, joys for successes and outbursts for defeats. Claudio (Vassallo, ed.), I will miss our intense evenings on the road, after dinner, with the inevitable 'little beer', talking about cycling and always seeking a new way to improve ourselves. Camilla (Vassallo, ed.), precious companion of many race supplies, I will forever remember our race analyses and our confidences. Antonio (Vassallo, ed.), Silvano (Sannazzaro, ed.), Luca (Mesce, ed.) and Alberto (Dell'Aglio), irreplaceable vehicle driving companions, I will miss the long trips until late at night and the genuine chats to keep us company. Now is the time to lower the curtain and change the scene. The plot, without a doubt, will be different, but the performers will remain forever the same, with the same commitment to wanting to do something beautiful for cycling. Thank you from the bottom of my heart..."
An important thank you was also addressed to the precious sponsors who supported the team with so much passion and seriousness. How can we not mention: CRFossano, Annibale Viterie, Latterie Inalpi, Acqua Valmora, Banca CRS, Greenthesis, Idrotermica, Dosa Pach e Pack Service, Erreci, represented by Matteo Macchioni, Elektro.m Impianti by Luca Mesce and Novoplast Due by Claudio Vassallo and Maria Gabriella Cocciolo. Applause also to Papagolf, an association that helps to monitor roads and intersections during cycling competitions, and to the trusted mechanic Claudio Groppo.
Ample space was dedicated to the athletes, particularly moved in remembering anecdotes and emotions experienced wearing the glorious jersey of the Piedmontese team. Among the former athletes who intervened were: Michela Corino (RCT representative in the 2014-2016 seasons), Chiara Parusso (2015-2018), Giulia Rosa (2014), Alessia Penna (2014), Gloria Manzoni (2014), Margarita Pakhomova (2016-2017), Beatrice Caudera (2017-2018), Rachele Bonzanini (2019-2021), Elisa Roccato (2022-2023), Camilla Marzanati (2021-2023), Irene Cagnazzo (2022-2023), Valentina Basilico (2020-2021), Matilde Vitillo (2015-2020), and Camilla Vassallo (2006-2011 and 2014-2018). Applause, finally, to the talented girls who wore the Racconigi Cycling jersey in this last competitive season: Sofia Cabri, Arianna Giordani, Asia Rabbia, and Alessia Sgrisleri. All those present were also given a precious almanac titled: "Our story... the true passion", which through statistics, photos, and palmares retraces the eleven seasons of Racconigi Cycling Team history. A story that has not ended, but that in 2025 will see a new beginning...
